Make a Splash with Direct Mail
Simple as one, two, three…

3. The Mail Piece
Ok, so maybe t’s not that simple.

The List has to be good! That means you have determined your best customer. Who is your best customer? “Everyone with a pulse” is not a good answer. If you have not done this soul searching activity, don’t bother to shot gun a mass mailing hoping something hits. Determine the demographic that wants to buy from you. Age, sex, income, geographic area, etc. are a few factors, but really dig deep into your current customer base to see the common denominator. Find your favorite customers – it’s easier to attract the same and easier to work with people you like.

The Offer also has to be good! Once you’ve determined who wants to buy from you, determine what they want to buy! Be specific, match the interests and motivations of the people on your list. A restaurant that caters to families will do well with a “Kids Eat Free” offer. A mailing to parents with school age kids in the restaurant’s zip code makes for a high return. Find your sweet spot.

The Mail Piece has to be great! It is the presentation of the offer. A well designed post card is a very cost effective way to communicate with your current list and potential customers. For help in creating a great piece:
Collect a file of ads or postcards that catch your eye, save it for future reference. They can be from any industry, you can rewrite them to fit you and your offer.
Use testimonials and restate your offer a few times in the piece.
A Call to Action is important so you can track the success of the offer
The headline is the most important part of any ad or letter.
Make it snappy!
And a picture is worth a thousand words! Use one that shows your ideal customer and talk directly to them.
